Redevelopment of the Former Montreal Children's Hospital
Details
The site of the former Montreal Children’s Hospital is located at the intersection of Atwater Avenue and René-Lévesque Boulevard, within the Ville-Marie Borough and the City of Westmount. The site’s location benefits from its proximity to the downtown core, Cabot Square, and access to the metro at Atwater Station. In addition to being part of the renewal of Sainte- Catherine Street West, the major development project proposed for this site is aligned with the PPU objectives of the ‘Quartier des grands jardins’, which aims to redevelop and enhance large institutional properties, and consolidate residential characteristics of the area into high-quality living environments.
The redevelopment project of the former Montreal Children’s Hospital takes an innovative approach to mix urban functions, which reflects the diverse population of this area. The elaborate development program meets neighbourhood needs, while inviting new residents to the area. The project offers a variety of residential typologies, including rental housing, condominiums and social/community housing. The whole project is anchored around a new civic pole consisting of a community center and an enlarged and redeveloped Place Henri-Dunant. In addition, offices, businesses, and services contribute to the mix of uses in the area. Finally, in order to preserve the historic significance of the hospital, the first nursing home (and oldest Wing) will be restored and integrated into the project.
