‘Placette’ Marché Central (Phase II)
Details
As part of the rebranding of Marché Central, QuadReal mandated Fahey et associés to develop a landscaping concept to enhance the experience of 10 million visitors annually to its shopping centre. The ‘placette’ project was carried out as part of Phase II of the Marché Central redevelopment project, including the portion located between Chabanel Street West and Legendre Street West. This portion of the shopping centre includes a concentration of fashion and décor retailers.
The mandate involved creating a lively and attractive gathering place around an existing building that will be converted into a restaurant. The concept for the development was to create a new public hub inspired by textiles. The space is part of a pedestrian network that connects three large commercial buildings.
Inspired by the current trend of shared streets, the public space encourages motorists to slow down, as plants and street furniture create shaded areas for relaxation for visitors who wander from one store to another. The signature element of the space is an architectural pergola that takes the colours and shapes of the new shopping centre logo and declines through the central promenade. The choice of ambient lighting and furniture reinforces this new experience offered to customers and merchants who can also contribute to the liveliness of the square with the
ephemeral pop-up shops and amenities related to promotional events.
